Welcome Descendants of Thomas Jefferson Huff
Several facts about our common ancestor:
Thomas Jefferson Huff was born on July 31, 1828 in Greenville, South Carolina.
He moved to Jones County, Mississippi in 1846.
He married Sarah Elizabeth Brumfield in 1857 and they had three children.
He served as First Lieutenant in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and fought in the Battle of Vicksburg.
He was a Prisoner of War at Vicksburg and was released in July 1863.
He was noted as Absent Without Leave from the Confederate Army in May and June 1863 and August 1863.
He was dropped from his Confederate Army Company and Regiment in 1864.
He was appointed by Governor Sharkey, a Whig Unionist during the Civil War, in a dual appointment as Sheriff of Jones County, MS, at the requests of the Newt Knight Company in 1865, which infuriated the former Confederate vanguard and cited by Confederate petitioners in letters to Governor Sharkey.
After the death of his first wife, he remarried Mary Elizabeth Statham in 1867 and they had twelve children.
He was elected to the Mississippi State Legislature in 1884 for one term.
He died on May 28, 1917 in Jones County and is buried in the John Jackie Knight Cemetery located on private family land.
